Melbourne punk-rockers Clowns are set to release their third full-length, Lucid Again, on May 12th via Poison City, with an exclusive stream of the record available from today via Rolling Stone Australia.
Like a shotgun blast, Lucid Again erupts, and while opener and title-track takes two minutes to fumble through a demo recording to the inevitable explosion — before hightailing into hi-fidelity — once it's there, there's no letting up.
"Like A Knife At A Gunfight" is as brash as the title suggests, swirling into psych-rock before making a b-line for the bar-line amidst spat claims that "you'll never find me.", while "Pickle" drags clean-cut riffs into the dirt via Fucked Up-esque fury and even the brighter, as-pop-punk-as-they-get lead single "Destroy the Evidence" is an unhinged panic, propelled by vocalist Stevie Williams' despairing knife-edge strain.
Leading throughout, Williams' versatility shines on "Noise In The Night", as he cuts through the chaotic clutter with a commanding, sermon delivery, while on "Fifteen Minutes of Infamy" he follows the frenetic lead of his bandmates, ahead of a chant-a-long break — the most confident thrust of punk attitude across the nine-track release.
The only reprise offered is the teasing commencement of closer, "Not Coping", which suggests a ballad bookend, before abruptly erupting into more chaos, more spilt drinks, more dangling limbs of crowd-surfers etc. A blend — or battle — of swoons and feedback follows and across nine epic minutes Clowns pack in their full range, from gutter-punk rawness to flirts of So-Cal punk catchiness — and all that exists in-between.
Following the Friday, May 12th release, the band head out on the road through June for a series of launch shows.
