Future Is Now: Tigertown

For our regular Future Is Now column we profile the hottest artists who are climbing the charts, breaking the Internet or just dominating our office stereos.

SOUNDS LIKE: Triumphant glitter cannons at the sunset slot of a summer festival.

FOR FANS OF: Grouplove, Vampire Weekend, Taylor Swift

WHY YOU SHOULD PAY ATTENTION: Beginning life in 2011 as the bedroom, indie-folk project of Chris Collins and his wife Charlie, Tigertown garnered almost instant radio attention with debut single "Go Now". Buoyed by tour bookings in support of Matt Corby, Emma Louise and Husky, Chris enlisted siblings Alexi and Elodie to form the current live band. In recent years the southern Sydney quartet have introduced a far more prominent pop element to their sound, eventuating in a three-month stretch in Los Angeles in 2015 with renowned producer Tommy English (BØRNS, Ladyhawke), sessions that resulted in breakout hit "Lonely Cities". Exposed to a wider overseas audience via showcases at CMJ and SXSW, as well as the main support slot on St. Lucia’s North American tour, in October the group released their fifth EP, Papernote, led by the infectious title-track. Now signed to Atlantic Records, the group have just finished up their debut LP, due early 2017.

THEY SAY: "We were just constantly trying to work out what we were doing and how to be good at it. The one thing that’s the same is we’ve always just loved good pop songs", says Chris of the quartet’s stylistic shift. "I guess just for what we had back then, we were doing it on acoustic guitars and stuff, so then we got better at different ways of recording. Now there’s a beat to it, but I think in essence the songs aren’t that different. Our desire has always been to write a classic pop song."

HEAR FOR YOURSELF: To appreciate the full breadth of the group’s pop spectrum, try festival-ready anthem "Papernote" and brooding ballad "Bullet From the Gun".

From issue #782 (January 2017), available now.
