As is now a January ritual, the reveal of the line-up for the monster two-day, double weekend California festival, Coachella, brings with it a flood of social media reaction: Eminem, really? No way Beyonce will cancel two years in a row, right? Jamiroquai! X Japan! Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever! Why no Bowie hologram?
Amidst which, some found themselves stuck on a name: Dreams. Who the hell is/are Dreams?
The poster's font-size hierarchy puts them on level pegging with Perfume Genius, TroyBoi and Greta Van Fleet — all very much existing, functioning music acts — but despite the best efforts of forum sleuths ('70s jazz rock act, James Ferraro alias) all that could be uncovered was a barren Twitter account and an unoccupied website.
That is until today, with that same website revealing a 48-second snippet of a track — a euphoric, '80s-style dance number only identified as "No One Defeats Us".
The vocal lead on the track distinctly sounds like Luke Steele, leading to our assumption that Dreams is the long-awaited collaboration between the Empire of the Sun frontman and Daniel Johns — a musical partnership that has been on the cards since 2008. Most recently, in August, 2016, Johns posted to Instagram a photo of the pair, significantly accompanied with the caption: "Early DREAMS".
Representatives for the pair would not confirm to Rolling Stone Australia the current status of the collaboration.
