On Monday, new music showcase, Bigsound, shared the first details of their 2017 program, which this year will run from September 5th to 8th, once more hosted across various venues at Brisbane's Fortitude Valley.
Alongside announcements that the program will extend an extra day this year and that artists will now be allowed to play two showcases, organisers have revealed that a new $100,000 prize will also be offered to artists.
In a partnership with Levi's, the prize pool is the largest ever offered to Australian artists. It will be judged by an international panel, with an initial cash prize of $25,000 awarded to an Australian artist or group on the final day of Bigsound, with three separate $25,000 prizes awarded over the next three quarters of the year — open to not only artists appearing at Bigsound 2017, but also anyone who has featured at the showcase over the past five years.
"It is wonderful to see the private sector support the growth of Bigsound and increasing opportunities to showcase Queensland's contemporary musicians," commented Queensland Premier and Minister for the Arts, Annastacia Palaszczuk, adding that Bigsound not only "showcases our songwriters and performers to the world" but also provides "important export pathways for artists."
Applications are now open via the Bigsound website, with the first allotment of tickets going on sale mid-May.
