Two years on from breakout single, "No One", Melbourne indie-folk singer-songwriter, Ben Wright Smith, is preparing to release his debut LP, The Great Divorce. The album is due Friday, March 17th and streaming exclusively from today via Rolling Stone.

For the album, Wright Smith worked alongside a pair of producers — Holy Holy's Oscar Dawson and Mark Moffatt (The Saints, Yothu Yindi, The Divinyls) — in sessions in both Melbourne and Nashville. The latter evidently inspiring new explorations, with elements of blues, alt-country and Americana seeping into his core, pop-skewed folk sound on tracks such as "Heavy", "Where Do All Your Friends Go When You're Sleeping", and "The Great Divorce". Elsewhere, Wright Smith tries his hand at all ends of the rock spectrum, from psych spaceouts ("I Don't Wanna Know", "Sand Grabber") to more straight-down-the-line, anthemic ballads ("Dead Man").

It's these experiments and constant shifts from expectations that reward throughout The Great Divorce. Alongside which, Wright Smith's sermons-of-consciousness lyrical flow and unshakable confidence is complimented by equally ostentatious and detail-focused production.

Live, however, the Melbourne-based singer-songwriter says him and his band are keeping the songs as evolving pieces, telling Rolling Stone that "as we keep performing I think new elements and sounds begin to take hold." A process set to be displayed when Wright Smith and company hit the road next month for an extensive run of national dates, details below.
