The Live Lodge popped it's heavy music cherry on Saturday night with a mixed bag of bands who were all brutal in their own unique way.
First up were the sludgy and mathematical Thorax, fronted by Kallie, who crouched in the corner and delivered a guttural roar that was tastefully placed on top of Thorax's angular instrumentation.
Next up, Melbourne stalwarts the Nation Blue hit the stage to rapturous applause, not having played in Sydney since the launch of their dual 2016 LPs Black and Blue. The three-piece ripped through an all too brief set that mostly covered newer tracks like the pulsating and sinister "Rendition" and "I Have No Representatives".
Far from being a traditional hard rock band, at times the Nation Blue come across like a heavier Midnight Oil, which makes the transition into Sydney's Lo!'s metalcore sound a welcome shock to the system. Relatively new vocalist Sam Dillon is a world class metal frontman, egging the crowd forward as the band ripped through numbers from their impressive new album Vestigal.
