Kendrick Lamar, Amy Shark, the Smith Street Band, Mastodon — a whos-who of who almost did. As, for the last few months, our only break from complete repetition in these weekly chart reports has been a rundown of the various challengers who've come, saw, and failed to end the reign of 2017's dominating chart force — Ed Sheeran.
And while we'd resigned ourselves to the fact that Harry Styles' self-titled debut was the only legitimate contender for the throne in the foreseeable future, this week Sydney hip-hop trio Bliss n Eso shocked, with their sixth studio LP, Off The Grid ending Ed Sheeran's eight week unbroken lockdown of the album chart top spot.
In addition, Sheeran's "Shape Of You" which — aside from falling back for one week following the release of Styles' lead single "Sign Of The Times" — has spent a record-breaking fifteen weeks atop the singles chart, was also toppled this week. The source, the king of flamboyance, DJ Khaled, and his star-studded new single "I'm The One."
For Bliss n Eso, Off The Grid is their third straight #1, following the lead of 2010's Running on Air and 2013's Circus in the Sky. Other notable new album entries include the Gorillaz' Humanz at #4, Adam Harvey and Beccy Cole's The Great Country Songbook Vol. II at #6, Tim Rogers' An Actor Repairs at #30 and Airling's debut LP, Hard To Sleep, Easy To Dream at #45.
In response to the chart-topping news, Bliss n Eso said they were "stoked to have debuted at number one, particularly when Ed Sheeran has been dominating the charts for so long!" In the statement, the group also referenced the recent controversies that have surrounded them, including the tragic shooting death of professional stuntman, Johann Ofner, on the set of their "Friend Like You" video in January, saying that they're "very thankful for our loyal fan base that have stuck with us through some very difficult times, and look forward to getting back out on the road to perform songs from the new album." That tour starts later this month, circling Australia up until the end of July; dates and details here.
