Amidst an extensive U.S. tour — which has also included a television performance on Conan — indie-rock Sydney trio, Middle Kids, recently took a short timeout to perform a haunting acoustic rendition of "Never Start", live on a balcony in New Orleans.
The triumphant nature of the original is displaced in favour of vulnerability here, as Hannah Joy's strained vocals guide the fresh perspective. The re-take is partnered aptly with glance-away snippets of suburban dusk surrounds, as well as scenes of long stretches of highways synonymous with life on the road.
"We've seen 23 states, crossed the continent sideways and upways, and the band still hasn't broken up!" Middle Kids' producer and multi-instrumentalist Tim Fitz reflects from the band's Texas base, ahead of a run of SXSW shows this week.
"On day 30 of our first USA tour, it's fair to say that we are getting a comprehensive knowledge of the cheapest hotel options in the nation, and the inside of our tour van," Fitz jokes, adding, more positively, that "we've also experienced that surreal cliche of hearing our tunes in random cafes or sung back to us by audiences halfway across the world, which is pretty special. It's great playing the set each night and seeing it get tighter."
Experience expected to benefit their homegrown fans, with the trio returning to Australia next month for a run of national dates, as well as shows alongside Ryan Adams on his forthcoming Australia tour. Further details of their upcoming shows, including remain U.S. dates, available via their website.
